Ash Wednesday is a busy day for most churches, but for St. Thomas, Louisville it was even busier with two interviews with local news stations. The Rev. Anne Vouga and Robin Garr appeared Wednesday on WHAS11's morning show Great Day Live! to share their ministry, Ashes to Go, of bringing ashes into their local community for those who may be too busy to make it to service. At the end of the broadcast, one of the hosts, Terry Meiners, received ashes live with the blessing, "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return."
While on site at Comfy Cow and a local Kroger, WDRB caught up with St. Thomas for their evening news. WDRB reported:
"It's not for the convenience -- that's not the reason," said Rev. Anne Vouga, who says the point is to offer a service to the community and the reminder that Lent isn't about giving something up but rather it is about taking something on.
"An ice cream shop, we think of as a place of luxury, something a little special just a contrast with the idea of Lent -- Ash Wednesday when we recognize our mortality," said parishioner Robin Garr."
