Joint Statement by Bishop William Gafkjen, Bishop of the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Bishop Terry White, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky
We are distressed to share with you news of the arrest of Gregory C. Witte who was charged with possession of matter portraying sexual performance of a minor and distribution of matter portraying sexual performance by a minor.
Dr. Witte has been serving as part-time organist at Messiah-Trinity Church, an Episcopal-Lutheran congregation in Louisville. He was immediately placed on administrative leave from the Church pending resolution of the charges against him and he will not be engaging in that work at the Church as the legal process unfolds. Dr. Witte is separately employed as a practicing dentist.
Dr. Witte is entitled to due process of law and both of our Churches. We will cooperate fully with law enforcement officials should we be asked. In the event Dr. Witte is found guilty of the charges against him he will be permanently separated from his employment at Messiah-Trinity.
We ask for your prayers for Mr. Witte, for the people of Messiah-Trinity, and for all those victimized by pornography.
Faithfully,
Bishop William Gafkjen
The Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
Bishop Terry White
