This time of year as the summer surely drifts toward autumn, and we look forward to a cooler breeze, I always appreciate in one way or another the coming change in the season, the possibilities of the future, maybe a new goal. And although I may feel a bit apprehensive these days simply because of this economy we have been watching, I can't help but think there will always be a benefit in looking to the long term, in remaining optimistic about possibilities, in keeping vigilant about the need around us and in remembering the value of reaching toward some common goal.
Through the optimism of Episcopalians across our region, this diocese has long supported numerous initiatives and organizations, both at home and abroad, whose goal is to help people improve their lives and secure a brighter future for their families.
One of the longest running of these organizations has been St. George's Community Center, located in Louisville adjacent to St. George's Episcopal Church. Since 1964, St. George's Community Center has helped to launch youth into flights of self-discovery while providing opportunities that will impact their lives for the benefit of the community. With programs throughout the year, and with the energetic and highly successful Freedom School during the summer, St. George's feeds these children every day and provides critical after-school care, which includes but is not limited to tutoring, college preparatory activities and financial literacy.
Through the years the "Read Aloud" event that runs for several days during the Freedom School session has brought these students face to face with a broad spectrum of community leaders, broadcast personalities and college athletes, who read a few pages from a favorite book, and in that short time shared over those written words, offer these kids a glimpse of the value of education, their potential for success, and their value to the world around them.
During this difficult economy, of course, many successful programs such as this are facing funding cuts and the real possibility of no longer being able to remain viable, much less healthy. St. George's Community Center, too, is in this situation. Due to the current state of the economy, they are facing loss of funding from government sources, from corporate sponsors and from individuals as well. The community needs that have been served by St. George's for so many years are today in danger of no longer being met. We will always face new challenges in our world. There remains, however, the optimism of the future. Please consider a tax deductible gift for that future, to St. George's Community Center.
There is much to be thankful for around us, and much yet to look forward to.
