Loading...“Angels in our Midst,” the fifth annual flower festival sponsored by the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 211 North Third Street in Bardstown, will occur on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (ET) with floral displays, flower arranging demonstrations, art displays and refreshments.
The theme, “Angels in our Midst,” will honor the angels in our community through a community outreach event celebrating all things floral.
Paul wrote that “from the visible creation, we can know the invisible things of God.” Flowers are, in most of the special occasions of our lives, outward signs of the beauty and glory of Creation. Colors warm our hearts; scents open and move our minds to appreciate the beauty of life itself. Angels are those who open the windows of life to reveal God at work in the world, and we have many angels who do that daily here.
The flower festival will honor those “angels” with arrangements expressing this theme by using only fresh flowers and greenery. Arrangements can be displayed in a simple vase, or it can be a wall-hanging, or decorate a church pew. It can depict a tableau or scene. Hopefully, each artist will provide a brief description of the flora used and the relationship to the festival theme. Local businesses, civic organizations and individuals will be represented.
The event is being held during the weekend of the Kentucky Bourbon Festival to give the many visitors to our community an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the festival’s arrangements, while enjoying our local hospitality.
Saturday’s schedule will include a bonsai demonstration at 10 a.m. by Doug Phillips, a bonsai enthusiast, a workshop on herbal teas and herbs by master gardener Jessica Conley at noon, and a concert at 2 p.m. by a Suzuki method student ensemble. In addition to a large number of floral arrangements, a floral-themed art gallery will display work by local artists with the art available for purchase as well.
The church’s regular 10 a.m. Sunday worship service of Holy Communion will center around the theme with displays of the floral arrangements from the previous day, according to the Rev. Karl Lusk, church pastor, who noted that the public is cordially invited to attend not only the flower festival but the worship service as well.
Local groups and individuals are encouraged to participate, either by designing an arrangement or providing art objects. Registration is required to assure adequate space.
