Women from St. John's Episcopal Church and Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Murray, Ky., joined together to assemble 47 baby layettes consisting of a blanket, undershirt, socks, sleeper, soap, washcloth and a dozen diapers. This ecumenical effort led by the Episcopal Church Women has been going on for more than 10 years, with members of both congregations donating items for the layettes during Lent.
The layettes are given as gifts to babies who would not otherwise have an outfit to wear home from the hospital. The layettes were delivered to Murray-Calloway Hospital and Life House (a crisis pregnancy agency) in Murray. For the first time, layettes were also given to the Jackson Purchase Medical Center in Mayfield. Several former members of St. Martin's in Mayfield, which closed two years ago, are now attending St. John's, and the congregation is extending its outreach in order to continue the ministry of the Episcopal Church into the Mayfield-Graves County area. The congregation is also supporting the Mayfield Habitat for Humanity project and the Need Line, Mayfield's emergency food pantry.
