At least three tornadoes struck central Florida on Friday, February 2nd, killing 20 people. Four counties—Lake, Sumter, Seminole and Volusia—have been declared federal disaster areas. It is estimated that 1,500 homes and buildings were destroyed or damaged in the affected counties. The storm produced the second deadliest tornado in Florida's history.
Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) has been in communication with the affected dioceses in Central and Southwest Florida. Initial reports from two state that Episcopal congregations were not directly affected, however the dioceses are assessing the unmet needs of local communities. Richard Ohlsen, ERD's Director of Domestic Disaster Response and Preparedness, is also in contact with Florida Interfaith Network in Disaster. ERD stands ready to respond as needs are identified.
