Loading...Interfaith Paths to Peace, in cooperation with more than a dozen major religious organizations and churches, will host an interfaith service at 2 p.m. (EST) on Sunday, Jan. 14, at Strathmore Presbyterian Church to honor all persons, military and civilian, who have died and suffered in the war in Iraq.
Strathmore Presbyterian Church, 2201 Hawthorne Ave., Louisville, is located at the intersection of Hawthorne and Bardstown Road.
The service will include prayers, readings and music drawn from the world’s great religious traditions.
Other sponsoring organizations include Kentucky Council of Churches, Independent Muslims of Louisville, the Community Relations Council of the Jewish Community Federation of Louisville, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville, the Episcopal Diocese of Kentucky, Friends (Quaker) Meeting of Louisville, the Hindu Temple of Louisville, the Mid-Kentucky Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church USA, the Center for Faith and Action, Drepung Gomang (Tibetan Buddhist) Institute of Louisville, James Lees Presbyterian Church, Unity of Middletown and Baha’is of Louisville.
The total of U.S. military dead in Iraq now exceeds 3,000. On Dec. 11, 2006, the total number of dead and wounded from the U.S. reached 25,000. The number of Iraq civilians who have died has never been accurately counted. The number ranges from 52,000 to 650,000.
As of Nov. 4, 2006, the U.N. High Commissioner on Refugees estimated that 1.8 million Iraqis had been displaced to neighboring countries, and 1.6 million were displaced internally, with nearly 100,000 Iraqis fleeing to Syria and Jordan each month.
