Who - James Rightmyer leads the Choral Arts Society in the final performance of the 2010-2011 season. In addition to the chorus, the all-Mozart concert features pianist Nancy Albrink; vocal soloists Leslie Fagan, Erin Keesy, Ricky Case, and Phillip Morgan; and members of the Louisville Orchestra.
What - In an era that valued expression of form over emotion, Mozart managed to invest a major liturgical work with some of the most sublime emotional utterances found in any period of music. The Mass in C Minor is arguably one of the great masterworks of choral/orchestral repertoire.
The Choral Arts Society was formed in 1995 to present choral literature primarily of the Romantic and Contemporary periods. Its conductor and music director, James Rightmyer, is organist and choirmaster at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church. During recent seasons the Choral Arts Society has expanded its repertoire to include choral masterpieces of all eras and has recently performed works by Bach, Handel and Monteverdi in addition to perennial favorites Johannes Brahms, Benjamin Britten, Gustav Holst, Felix Mendelssohn, Francis Poulenc, Ralph Vaughan Williams and William Walton. Nancy Albrink is artistic director of the Academy of Music at St. Francis in the Fields. Founded in 1997, The Academy has become the hallmark of excellence in classical music education in Louisville. Instruction is offered to students of all levels in the areas of piano, voice, violin, flute, guitar and chamber music. Weekly lessons are enhanced by monthly performance classes. Through a wide range of musical opportunities, Academy students gain a special knowledge of what makes music great. With the help of Gist Piano Company and a dedicated board of directors, the academy has purchased a nine-foot concert grand Steinway piano as well as four studio pianos, thus establishing itself as an All-Steinway school. The academy is now well-positioned to enter its second decade of providing the highest quality instruction to pre-college students with some of the finest instruments available in the Louisville area.
Leslie Fagan's exceptional artistry and talent continue to garner much attention on international stages. Having performed under the batons of such noted conductors as Hans Graf, Sir David Willcocks, Jukke Pekke Saraste, Kent Tritle and Daniel Lipton, Fagan has delighted audiences and critics alike at Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Bordeaux Opera House, Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall.
