[Sewanee, Tenn., Aug. 30, 2010] Sabel Overlin, daughter of Stacey and Kathleen Overlin of Paducah, was recently named a Claiborne Scholar at St. Andrew's-Sewanee School. The Claiborne Scholarship is a merit award for boarding students entering the ninth or tenth grade and provides significant tuition support.
Sabel attended Paducah Middle School, where she played soccer, and served as Student Council representative and a member of the National Honor Society. Among her academic classes at St. Andrew's, Sabel is taking Chinese and is playing varsity soccer. She served as a four-year acolyte, a reading camp volunteer, and a Project Hope Animal Shelter volunteer in her hometown.
Each year at St. Andrew's, a number of Claiborne merit scholarships are awarded to new boarding students entering ninth or tenth grade. Qualified students retain their scholarships until graduation. To be selected as a Claiborne Scholar, a student must have a strong academic record and exhibit leadership qualities that reflect a sense of honor and a commitment to serving the community. This merit-based program is open to all families, including those who would not qualify for need-based aid. The Claiborne Scholars program is named in honor of Archdeacon William Sterling Claiborne, whose lifetime of service included providing education and health care in the areas surrounding Sewanee. Ordained as an Episcopal priest in Sewanee in 1901, he was instrumental in the founding of St. Andrew's School and re-establishing St. Mary's School for Mountain girls.
