Loading..."Waxing and Waning: Prints and Sculpture" by Ben Hart, a Murray Episcopalian will be on view at Christ Church Cathedral, 425 So. 2nd St., Louisville, from April 1 to May 21, 2011.
Hart was graduated from Murray State University with a BFA in printmaking in 2010. "Waxing and Waning" features recent intaglio prints from copper plates alongside ceramic sculpture.
His work explores his life of faith, both as a a timeline and as specific moments along the way. The images are formed of forests and fields, the tree line waxing and waning throughout, acting as an allegory for feelings of faith and involvement in the church.
The tree tops comes together in gothic arches reminiscent of church architecture, a theme also referenced in Hartʼs sculpture. The artistʼs hand is evident in each piece: every mark of their creation remains apparent, rather than smoothed over. Their postures speak to moments in faith and the way those moments are created. Those visible marks speak to Hartʼs belief of the nature of humanity as created beings.
The artist currently lives in Louisville. He is an intern at St. Andrewʼs Episcopal Church as part of the discernment process as he explores a call to ordained ministry.
