Loading...St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School, a boarding and day college preparatory school located in Sewanee, Tenn., is offering a number of merit scholarships to new boarding students entering ninth or tenth grade. Qualified students retain their scholarships until graduation.
To be selected as a Claiborne Scholar a student must have a strong academic record and exhibit leadership qualities that reflect a sense of honor and a commitment to serving the community. This merit-based program is open to all families, including those who would not qualify for need-based aid.
St. Andrew's is an intentionally small school, offering personal attention and challenging academics to 265 students in grades 6-12. Highlights of the school’s programs include outing adventure that utilizes the school’s beautiful 550-acre mountaintop campus, outstanding programs in the performing and visual arts, no-cut athletics, Chinese language instruction, opportunities for qualified upperclassmen to take classes at the University of the South, and small residential houses that pair 12-15 students with a faculty family. Steeped in the teachings and practices of the Episcopal Church, the school welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and is currently home to students from 17 states and 11 countries.
The 2009-10 recipients of the Claiborne Scholarship are: Lauren Baulch of Nashville; John Bowman “Bo” Craig of Shelbyville, Tenn.; Anna Condon of Memphis, Tenn.; Taylor Kavanaugh of Danielsville, Ga.; Greer Sims of Ambrose, Ga.; Jacob Brashear of Lexington, Ky.; Kathryn Hansen of Wilmington, Del.; Jessica Honiker of Sevierville, Tenn.; and Michael Rudolph of Woodstock, Ga.
The Claiborne Scholars program is named in honor of Archdeacon William Sterling Claiborne, whose lifetime of service included providing education and health care in the areas surrounding Sewanee. Ordained as an Episcopal priest in Sewanee in 1901, he was instrumental in the founding of St. Andrew’s School and re-establishing St. Mary’s School for Mountain girls.
