Graduate research fellowships are one of the most coveted and prestigious awards available to students at the beginning of their graduate careers, says John McCarthy, the chair of the Linguistics Department at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
Each fellow receives a generous stipend for three years, tuition and an allowance for international travel. This year, a total of ten fellowships in the field of linguistics were awarded nationally.
Bogal-Allbritten, a 2005 graduate of Murray High School and a 2009 graduate of Swarthmore College, in Swarthmore, Penn., is a first-year doctoral student in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She specializes in syntax and semantics with a focus on Navajo.
