Loading...Members of the Covenant Committee at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church will worship in each other's churches on Sunday, May 17, honoring the 33rd anniversary of the 1976 Covenant Agreement between the two St. Matthews-area churches.
Members will join for worship at the 8:30 a.m. Mass at Holy Trinity and the 5 p.m. Eucharist at St. Matthew's.
Then-pastors Richard Humke (Episcopal) and Stanley Schmidt (Holy Trinity) signed the Covenant documents May 16, 1976, with Catholic Archbishop Thomas McDonough and Episcopal Bishop David Reed endorsing the commitment that the two parishes to meet together, pray for each other and cooperate in Christian service.
In recent years, Father Chuck Thompson and The Rev. Lucinda Laird have revived the Covenant Committee and supported its work. One major project has involved joint participation in the Habitat for Humanity program. Both churches have shared in start-up costs and workers have cooperated in the construction of two houses. A Raise the Roof event for a third Habitat house is planned for this Fall.
