Loading...St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Louisville, was one of four winners of the Lillian Yeager community service awards announced at the St. George Community Center's annual anniversary celebration last month.
Marking the center’s 45 years of service in the Parkland, Park-Hill and California neighborhoods in western Louisville, the Celebration of Success took place October 21 at at the Brown & Williamson Club at the Papa John’s Stadium.
The Lillian Yeager Community Service Awards recognize citizens, community and business leaders and St. George’s Community Center alumni for their volunteer contributions and commitments to community service and leadership in the Louisville area.
Accepted by St. Matthew’s rector, the Rev. Lucinda Laird, the award has special significance to the parish because the late Lillian Yeager, for whom it is named, was a longtime member of the parish. Her daughter, Michelle, in announcing the award recipients, said about St. Matthew’s contributions to the center and the community:
“I can honestly say that St. George’s Community Center may not have their lights on if it weren’t for this church. At St. George’s most dire time of need, the parishioners and church as a whole have helped pulled us through. For at least the past five years, the community center has received half of the offering collected on Easter Sunday. Members from the church have volunteered to tutor our youth and serve of the board. You would have thought that St. George’s Community Center was the only organization they supported, but that is far from true,” Yeager said. “They also support such organizations as Kenya Kids at Rongo, Dare to Care, Habitat for Humanity, Wayside Christian Mission, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, and CASA. St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church’s Outreach mission is ‘To bring the needs of God’s people throughout our community to the attention of this parish; to use our gifts and resources to meet immediate needs; and to address the underlying causes of those needs that we may better serve the world in Christ’s name.’ We are honored that they have embraced us with their resources and talents.”
Others to receive awards were Stephon Gilkey, Dionne Griffiths and PNC Bank.
