Loading...Sent by mail in previous years to clergy and parish leaders, the first set of pre-convention materials, including the registration form, is now available online at "Convention 2011" on the Diocese of Kentucky website (//www.episcopalky.org).
The materials offer information about registration, hotels, the tentative agenda and more information about the upcoming 184th Convention of the Diocese of Kentucky, which will be Nov. 11 and 12 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Louisville. This is the second diocesan convention to be held this year as the diocese transitions to a Fall annual gathering. (A list of links to specific information may be found at the end of this article).
Online registration
An important change for this convention: registration will be done entirely online at //www.episcopalky.org/convention-registration.html. Those who have previously registered online for diocesan events may find the registration form and process familiar. For those who have not registered on the diocese’s website before, the convention registration form includes detailed instructions. However, those having difficulties in completing the form may contact Mary Jane Cherry, the diocese’s communications director, for assistance. Although registration is done online, provisions have been made for the registration fees to be paid either online or by check by October 15, 2011. Because there will not be a banquet at this convention, a reduced fee of $100 per registrant is charged, except for retired clergy members, whose fee is $35.
Checks must be made out to Trustees and Council with the Memo line noting “Convention 2011 registration fee” and sent to the Diocese of Kentucky Convention 2011, 425 S. Second St., Suite 200, Louisville, KY 40202. [If the check total includes payment for multiple registrants, identify each registrant in a separate note with the check.]
A brief convention preview
Autumn is central to this year’s convention planning. According to the welcome letter [<//…get link>] from the Rev. Ben Maas, the people of St. Andrew’s, in partnership with members of Church of the Advent, are “working to make this first Fall convention the start of a fruitful new way of doing things in the Diocese of Kentucky.”
Not only does the convention theme, “First Fruits of Compassion,” mark the change in season for the annual gathering of Kentucky Episcopalians, he said, but the “harvest” theme also serves to remind us that everything we have comes from God and “God has an opinion about how we use and understand that bounty.”
As an initial step in encouraging diocesan leaders and visitors to join the convention’s campaign for us “to live compassionately and give generously,” convention planners are asking all who attend to bring canned or dry goods for the Dare to Care Food Pantry that is operated by the Church of the Advent and Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. “Our hope,” said Maas, “is that this tradition will continue with future hosting parishes.”
This year’s convention will begin, as in previous years, with an afternoon of workshops, committee and orientation meetings. The opening Eucharist, which will include an ordination, will be followed by a reception with heavy hors’ d’oeuvres in lieu of the annual banquet. The change, for this transitional convention only, will offer convention attendees and guests a rare chance to sample the dining and nightlife opportunities in Louisville.
